This event launched CIMA’s inaugural report Empowering Independent Media: U.S. Efforts to Foster Free and Independent News Around the World, which provides an in-depth assessment of media development efforts funded by the U.S. government and U.S.-based private donors.
The honorary co-hosts for the event were Sen. Richard Lugar (R-IN), Sen. Christopher Dodd (D-CT), Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Rep. Michael Pence (R-IN), co-founders of the Congressional Caucus for the Freedom of the Press.
Speakers included Senator Lugar, Representative Schiff, and Assistant Secretary David J. Kramer, with the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor at the U.S. Department of State. A panel discussion followed opening remarks, featuring Marguerite H. Sullivan, senior director, Center for International Media Assistance, David E. Kaplan, managing editor and principal writer of the report, Ellen Hume, research director, Center for Future Civic Media, MIT and Kurt Wimmer, senior vice president and general counsel, Gannett Co., Inc.
